DAMAGED: The St James Church in Riccarton will amalgamate with St Martin’s in Spreydon.

CHURCHES TO MERGE Two Anglican churches are set to amalgamate into one parish due to earthquake damage. Riccarton St James on Riccarton Rd and St Martin’s Spreydon on Lincoln Rd will merge officially on October 18. Riccarton St James, a stone church with significant histori-

cal value, was damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes and services were being held in the church’s Parish Centre. St Martin’s Spreydon suffered little damage in the earthquakes and will now host the parish’s morning services. Evening services will continue

to be held in the Parish Centre, on Riccarton Rd, so locals can get there easily. The amalgamation will be formalised with a blessing by Bishop Victoria Matthews on October 18. A special service will be held at St Martin’s.

St Martin’s Reverend John de Senna and St James Reverend Les Memory said the amalgamation would provide greater spiritual witness to the community through synergy and the sharing of mutual resources. “Two can do more together

than apart,” Rev Memory said. They believe the new parish will enter a growth cycle marked by fresh vitality, new spiritual energy, and intensified community engagement. They hope the amalgamation will boost numbers at the church.

Bid to prevent parking fines ANDREW KING

Special permits could help prevent trade staff from getting fined for over-staying in time-restricted parking in the suburbs. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board is going to take the idea of specialised contractor permits to the city council to get approval. Workers who need to park in time-restricted parking to access their worksite would be able to apply for an exemption that would allow them to run over the allotted time. It comes after contractors working on Holmwood Rd were fined for parking longer than the allocated 120min. Dr Stuart Gowland took the idea of permits to the board including information of a similar system in the United Kingdom. “Obviously, if you have off-street parking for the contractors then they can use that,” he said. “But some have vehicles that are too big to fit down the driveway.” Dr Gowland said due to the shops on the corner of Holmwood Rd and Rossall St getting bigger, the parking problem was now encroaching on the residents. “We told them [city council] that this would happen, they said

SPECIAL PERMITS: Contractors who need to park longer than the allocated time may soon be able to apply for a permit to prevent being fined. it wouldn’t and now it has,” Dr Gowland said. “So now we are asking that we have a trial run for permits around our property.” City council’s regulatory compliance unit manager Tracey Weston said that if off-street parking cannot be negotiated, then upon request, it [city council] will allow contractors’ vehicles to park in a time-restricted area for the du-

ration of time while the work is being completed. A maximum of two vehicles are permitted to park in the restricted area and if the work continues beyond the initially requested time frame, then a request to extend this permission is considered. City councillor Jaime Gough said it looked like a simple thing to set up as long as “bureaucratic red tape” didn’t get in the way.

“I am actually surprised that we are only hearing about this five years down the line after the earthquakes,” he said. “I can see it working quite well if it is done on a case-by-case basis.” Cr Gough said that if it was effective in their ward then he could see no reason why the permits should not be offered all over the city.

GREEN LIGHT FOR CYCLEWAY The city council will build a new cycleway route past Christchurch Boys’ High School and North Hagley Park next year. The project was approved on Thursday after public feedback showed significant support for the work. The approved work includes new traffic signals, for pedestrians and cyclists across Kahu Rd. There are also changes to the crossing at Straven Rd and also to the Matai St/Harakeke St intersection. The proposed shared pedestrian/cycle path in North Hagley Park will also be changed. The work is due to be finished late next year. HALSWELL CAFE AWARDED Halswell’s White House Black has been commended in the Christchurch Civic Trust Awards for adapting and retaining a heritage building. The Halswell Rd building was once a rural homestead and has been turned into a cafe. The award will be presented at a trust event at Knox Church Lounge tomorrow. Socks saga When owner Poppy saw her 5 month old Rottweiler cross puppy Marlo chewing one of her socks, she knew she needed to get it off her in case it was swallowed. Unfortunately Marlo had better ideas, quickly gulping down the sock before it could be retrieved.

Karin Campbell Yes, it needs a post shop. I use it often for banking and postal service requirements. I am sick of seeing useful shops being closed and replaced by yet another café or real estate agent. To tell the public that they can go to Merivale or Riccarton is insulting and for those that use the Fendalton service they use it because it is handy - close to home - walking distance. Before Christmas is not the issue it shouldn’t be closing at all! Merran Layton I am devastated at the thought of the closing of Fendalton post. So inconvenient to drive to other inaccessible outlets. And the loss of the helpful staff, a big loss to the community.

There then followed an anxious two hour wait to see if Marlo would vomit the sock back up. When this didn’t happen, Poppy rang us at McMaster and Heap and she was advised to bring Marlo in for an assessment.

Something on your mind? Email andrew.king@starmedia.kiwi in 150 words or less Facebook us on www.facebook. com/chchwesternnews woman is incredible – to brush us off by saying we can go to Riccarton or Merivale is insulting. From where we live in Hamilton Avenue, our next nearest post shop is in the Bush Inn Centre. Last time I was there, there were queues out to the door, and only two people on duty behind the counter. Is this “service” ? I think not. Staff at Fendalton mall post shop are always friendly and obliging, and the branch performs an essential community service.

B and A Brinson The announced closure of the Fendalton mall post shop is unbelievable. Surely the management of the mall must realise that a post shop is an absolutely necessary “anchor” (as is a bank branch) for any suburban shopping precinct. What have they been doing about it? Why has NZ Post “struggled since June last year” to find “another business”? Please explain – are not NZ Post and KiwiBank state owned enterprises? Why should “another business” be required? The arrogance of the NZ Post spokes-

Once Marlo was checked over it was elected to remove the sock using the practice endoscope rather than waiting to see if it would pass through the gastrointestinal tract.

The endoscope was introduced into the mouth and passed down the oesophagus and into the stomach. Initially the sock could not be seen amongst all the food that had been eaten for breakfast. After some of this food was removed, the black sock was soon located. Special forceps were then passed down inside the endoscope and used to grasp and lock onto the sock.

The risk of leaving the sock to pass through the gastrointestinal tract is that it might not manage to do that. If it is not vomited back up from the stomach, it can potentially get stuck as it leaves the spacious stomach and moves into the narrower small intestine. This can lead to a very sick animal requiring expensive surgery and hospitalisation. During the procedure to remove the ingested sock, Marlo was anaesthetised and placed on intravenous fluids and a blood pressure monitoring system.

our PEOPLE

Rangi Ruru highlight of 40 years in Rangi Ruru principal Julie Moor has been in education for nearly 40 years. She speaks with Andrew King about the old school yards of Christchurch, why she enjoys teaching and watching her daughter grow up in school. Hi Julie. Tell us about yourself, where did you grow up? I grew up in Mt Pleasant. I went to Mt Pleasant School, the old one. In form 2 it changed to the new one. Then I went to Christchurch Girls’ High School, the old one that does not exist anymore. It used to be in Cranmer Square. What was it like growing up in Christchurch? I thought it was wonderful. I do remember playing around in the sea a lot. It was great to grow up here. That’s why I like it so much because it was such a good place to grow up. I am totally committed to Christchurch. Have you lived here all your life? Apart from three years in Geraldine, yes I have. What was your favourite class at school? I don’t know actually. It would depend on the year. I absolutely

loved english. Did you have a favourite teacher? I do remember in year 12 or 13 a young English teacher who did inspire me. The teachers were a sign of the times and I don’t really remember any, apart from that one, who changed my life or made me think differently about what I wanted to do. When did you decide you wanted to get into education? Probably in my last year of high school because in those days you could take out a studentship. You would get paid to go to university with the proviso that you went to teachers college, which was fine because that is what I wanted to do. Where did you study? I studied at Canterbury University. At the old one (laughing), everything I did was in the old one. I think we were the last ones through before it was moved.

Where was your first job? My first teaching job was at Geraldine High School. What was that like? Actually it was great, because it is such a great community. I think it was good for me to leave the city and experience something different. Young people are young people, it does not really matter where you are. Where else have you taught? I was at Linwood College for 20 years. Have you always taught at high schools? Well, years 7-13. Geraldine was years 7-13 and so is Rangi Ruru. Is it a big change to have years 7 and 8 at a high school? I like it. I think it is a really nice model. It is quite seamless. You can give a quite specialised approach to year 7 and 8 but they have the resources of the whole high school. I think it give a really rich experience for the student. Do you have kids yourself? I have a daughter. She went to Rangi. Did have her in a class? I did have her in one or two classes that I was teaching. She is very much her own person and for me it was a huge privilege

because I got to see her throughout her schooling on a daily basis which was a fabulous thing to be a part of. Not many parents get to see that. What is your favourite thing about educating young minds? The complete unpredictability which is kind of a positive and a negative. But no two days are the same when you are working with young people. It is their openness and the vitality, it is really refreshing. What it does is it make you quite optimistic about the future. It is a bumpy time as an adolescent. Sharing that journey with them and seeing them confident and ready to take on the world is a wonderful thing. You have resigned as principal of Rangi Ruru, so where to from here for you?

Yes I have. I think it is the right time for me and the right time for the school. I always say to the girls you have to take those daring leaps in life so I am doing just that. The culture of the school is fantastic and I feel good about that. It is a wonderful place to be. Is being principal of Rangi a high point of your career? Yes, definitely. Nothing can beat this. There are other things out there that I can do but it has been one of the best times of my life. How long have you been at Rangi for? Sixteen years, and I have been principal for 14 of those. I don’t move around much, I get somewhere and then I stay because I like it. Thanks Julie.

HIGH POINT: Julie Moor said her time at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has been one of the best times of her life.

CANTERBURY BLOKART CLUB The Blokart was invented by New Zealander Paul Beckett in 1999. With frequent wind and a variety of locations, Canterbury is a great place for Blokart sailing. The Canterbury Blokart Club has a membership of about 60, and was established in 2004 to further the sport through non-competitive sailing events, racing, coaching and a range of other club activities. Weather permitting, the CBC meets every Sunday from midday next to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand, 45 Harvard Ave. Other locations used for sailing are South Brighton Beach and Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora lake bed. ‘Tech nights’ and training days are held to help club members learn about sailing, kart maintenance, racing rules, Blokart accessories, and the sport generally. over 42 years, it is a group of over 50 men and women, making a difference as part of the world’s largest and fastest growing service organisation. The club activities include community assistance, aged care, disaster relief and youth development. Being a Lion empowers members to help others in a way that no one person could do alone. It meets at the Showgate Lounge, Riccarton Park, on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. There is a meal and fellowship, followed by guest speakers or meetings of its various committees. Being a Lions club member involves taking an active interest in the community with like-minded people, dedicated to working together to accomplish far more than would be possible as individuals. It invites interested people to phone president Marion McWha, 386 1581 or membership chairman Selwyn Dobbinson 342 9094. CANTERBURY JUNIOR STAMP CLUB The Canterbury Junior Stamp

Club was formed in the 1960’s by the late Ran Dacre and was named the Canterbury Museum Junior Stamp Club because it originally met in the Canterbury Museum classroom on Saturday afternoons. In 1980 with the opening of the new Philatelic Centre at nearby 27 Worcester Boulevard the club moved into these clubrooms and changed its name by dropping the ‘museum’. In 1998 along with all the other Christchurch-based stamp organisations, The Junior Club moved into its present base at the Philatelic centre, 67 Mandeville St where it continues to hold meetings for any school age collectors on Saturday afternoons. Membership ranges from five years of age up to one or two university age seniors. The club meets at 67 Mandeville St, Christchurch on second Saturday of each month. Doors open at 1pm with meetings starting from 2pm to 3.30pm. Annual membership subscription is $5.

Medal haul for gymnasts The Olympia Gymnastic Sports team has returned from nationals with a huge haul of medals. They competed in the rhythmic, trampoline and artistic categories New Zealand National Gymsports Championships. In the build-up to the World Age Group Championships to be held in Denmark in December, trampolinists Madaline Davidson and Bethany Long, who train at Olympia Gymnastic Sports, proved they are on track. Madaline took out the senior international women’s title, with Bethany pulling in the bronze medal.

Together, as a synchro team, they achieved the silver medal. Coach Alex Nilov said: “We have seven weeks until Denmark and the girls look ready to go and compete at their highest performance platform to date. “Together with Charlotte Worley, individual bronze medallist and synchro champion in sub junior, the nationals was an opportunity to check routines and was crucial in the build-up plans.” Level 7 men’s artistic champion, Alexy Vitry Audibert said: “There was big competition in level seven with 23 gymnasts. knew I had to make sure that everything I did was exactly like I did in training and I had to stay focused but relaxed. “This win has given me the confidence to know that I can take the next step in the under 18 junior international and I am motivated even more to keep my level of training up.” Paris Chin and Grace Knoyle took out the stage four and stage three rhythmic international competitions. Both of these girls were exceptional in their handling of the apparatus while completing routines that contain difficulties,

dance steps – all completed with the grace required of a rhythmic gymnast. Olympia Manager Kathryn Searle said: “Watch out for these two names in the future, under Elena Mesheryakova’s expert coaching we are sure to see these two girls feature on the international stage.” Back at the gym from this year’s nationals, it starts all over again. The dedication, determination and focus of all Olympia’s gymnasts has them moving on to new challenges and difficulties.

National titles won by Olympia Gymnastic Sports: Alexy Vitry Audibert - men’s artistic level 7 champion - Northwood, St Bedes College. Paris Chin - rhythmic stage 4 Champion - Upper Riccarton. Grace Knoyle - rhythmic stage 3 champion - Kennedys Bush. Ashleigh Pont - rhythmic level 10 champion - Avonhead. Madaline Davidson - senior women’s trampoline champion - Avonhead, Villa Maria College. Reegan Laidlaw - sub junior men’s trampoline champion – Prebbleton, St Thomas of Canterbury. Charlotte Worley – sub junior women’s synchro champion – Halswell, Villa Maria College.

International bowls event for student National club championship singles winner Tayla Bruce added another bowls trophy to her cabinet with a win at the Burnside under-26 singles tournament last weekend. Facing Temuka’s Keanu Darby, Bruce found herself locked in an intriguing battle. It was an even game in which both players won an equal number of ends. A full house on the 20th end and a first bowl toucher on the 21st end took Darby to 20 points. Unfazed, Bruce drew two close shots on each of the next two ends, covered the back and in spite of Darby’s best efforts won the game 21-20. She faced Cambridge Central’s Jesse Russell in the final and found herself 7-2 down after five ends. Bruce rallied back with 19 points in 10 ends to take the title 21-8. The 20-year-old Canterbury Univer-

sity student is studying to be a primary school teacher and was selected as a Blackjack in March. Bruce will head away to Hong Kong in November to represent New Zealand at the International Bowls Classic. She will also participate in the international bowls events that will be played in Christchurch over the next 15 months. The Asia Pacific Bowls Championship is in November, Trans Tasman in March 2016, the Six Nations, which includes New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, Scotland and Ireland, in March 2016 and the World Bowls Championships in November-December 2016. The New Zealand National Championships will also be held in Christchurch after Christmas this year with their headquarters at the Burnside Bowling Club.

REWARD: Halswell United player Boon Ozawa has been selected for the Canterbury United ASB Premiership Team. Sean Mulcahy and Boon Ozawa were both selected for the Canterbury United ASB National Youth League. These two recently won club awards. ain and discomfort affects our lifestyle, sleep patterns and emotional state. Emily Taylor is classically trained with a degree in acupuncture. She often combines the traditional Eastern medicine of acupuncture plus Craniosacral Therapy to help resolve pain, balance the body and encourage a positive state of health. “Modern acupuncture covers many aspects of health ranging from trauma and musculoskeletal injuries through to migraines and recovery from disease or post-operation,” says Emily. While some people may be concerned at the use of needles, Emily assures that acupuncture is a gentle and effective treatment that can help many health complaints. While the initial visit may bring relief, a series of treatments is recommended so the body builds a foundation for long-term pain recovery. “Craniosacral Therapy uses light therapeutic touch to relieve tension and soft tissue

restrictions in the central nervous system making it ideal for people with over-sensitive muscles and nerve endings. Balancing the body’s delicate craniosacral system can help bring about healing at all levels: physical, mental and emotional.” Working in the Selwyn area for the last five years, Emily treats aCC and private patients at Lincoln and Halswell. Clients can book through SportsRehab on 0800 347 9494 or via Emily’s website www.heal.org.nz.

and injuries can impact on people’s lives so it is good to know specialist hand therapists; alison Wilding and Karyn Butler are available for one-on-one appointments at SportsRehab. “People may not appreciate the importance of their hands until they have an injury so they’re pleased to learn that quite a lot can be done to help them,” says Karyn who worked as a physiotherapist for 20 years before specialising in hand therapy. alison and Karyn say that disabilities and problems associated with hand injuries are unique and can create many problems. They treat injuries from the elbow down providing specialist support to general practitioners and hand surgeons. Special techniques and equipment are used when assessing patient injuries that allow a suitable rehabilitation programme to be prepared. “Hand therapy is an interesting ever changing field,” says alison, an experienced physiotherapist who has specialised in hand

therapy since 1995. “The adage use it or lose it is not always the case. Current research supports a blend of exercises that strengthen and assist mobility along with rest,” advises alison. “The trend is towards very controlled early movement with finger fractures,” adds Karyn. Hand therapy helps people with post-operative care needs; sporting, tendon and ligament injuries; fractures that need custom splints; and rehabilitation programmes that allow people to return to work and sport. Physiotherapy Optimises Surgery Recovery started work on strength and balance. We treat many clients recovering from different kinds of surgeries, but particularly orthopaedic operations. These include knee and hip replacements, and back, neck, shoulder, elbow and ankle surgeries. In all cases we find that it’s vital to begin rehabilitation as soon as possible. In some cases surgery can even be delayed with targeted physiotherapy to regain joint movement and strength. This is particularly true for hips and knees where the main issue is osteo-arthritis or wear and tear. Remember, if you don’t rehab correctly, that little limp that isn’t much of a problem now, can lead to pain in other areas later on.

We work in consultation with Christchurch Surgeons, communicating with them regularly. Initially we work to reduce swelling and pain, and then prescribe specific exercises to strengthen surrounding muscles and regain full function. Our two clinics are adjacent to the two YMCA gyms in Christchurch, so that many of our patients take advantage of their facilities to complete a physio-prescribed gym programme as their recovery progresses. If you are scheduled to have surgery, contact us at one of our clinics: Bishopdale 03 360 3606 or Hereford St (opposite the Arts Centre) 03 961 0236. Both have free car parking.

The team at Muscle People Physiotherapy have been treating Cantabrians for a range of physiotherapy concerns over many years, and they know how their clients benefit from their treatment, particularly after surgery. The physiotherapists at Muscle People explain more.

A

fter surgery it’s not always as simple as having an operation and being back on your feet straight away.’ For many people, recovery after surgery is a slow and sometimes painful journey leaving them feeling frustrated and sometimes a bit lost. For those who seek physiotherapy treatment after orthopaedic surgery in particular, there is hope, as studies show that physiotherapy

speeds up the recovery process and return to full function. Starting this process before surgery can also enhance the outcome and make your time post-operatively much easier to cope with. This is because you have already learnt the exercises you will need to do, have gone over the surgeon’s post operative instructions, ordered any equipment designed to make things easier and, in most cases, already

Use common sense when lighting up MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Several days of high temperatures and nor’west winds have had fire crews busy with a number of incidents caused by the wind such as power lines down and roofs lifting. This is expected and to a reasonable level unavoidable. What is avoidable is the number of people, in those parts of the district that allow open burning, doing so with branches and clippings on days when the forecast clearly indicates high winds possible. The sinking of heart and the feeling of helplessness that comes when a controlled fire ceases to be controlled can be avoided by simple common sense. High winds forecast – don’t light up. Simple. There were a couple of kitchen fires during the week and as usual in one an occupant required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation. It’s a natural reaction to try and deal with such a fire but the longterm effects, even of mild smoke inhalation, can be quite serious. Shut the door, get out and phone 111. Unless you can easily deal with a stove top fire, this is the sensible reaction. Smoke alarms alerted the occupants of a house in Hinau St, Riccarton, last week at a time when everyone was asleep. This is a ‘good result’ story. Nobody was hurt.

OUT OF CONTROL: Firefighters battle a blaze on State Highway 75 near Barrys Bay last week.

Although having been asleep everyone escaped. The story didn’t reach the media. Yet it was an excellent example of smoke alarms doing their job. Perhaps even saving lives. Every single home in the country should have them.

Soccer team undefeated BY FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

The Halswell United division 2 team went undefeated in their season, meaning they may have done enough to take a spot in the men’s division 1 competition next year. The division 2 side won 12 of their 14 league matches, and tied the remaining two, leaving them on 38 points at the end of the season, seven clear of second placed Christchurch United. Halswell United general manager, Jenn Halliday said: “(The team) won their league, were undefeated, and had two knockout cup wins this year . . . because of the weather, Mainland (Football) organised two extra knockout cups, at the end of the season, and the team won both.” If promoted by Mainland, it will be the first time Halswell can boast a team in each of Christchurch’s three premier men’s footballing competitions. Halswell division 2 player, Mike Dowd said he is proud the club will be able to provide a platform for talented Halswell youth players in the top three Christchurch leagues. Dowd also said he was thankful the Halswell men’s first team had managed to survive relegation from the Mainland Premier League, which allowed the division 2 side to be eligible for promotion.

Q

Where does all the steam go?

A

That’s an easy one. There isn’t any! Steam is only created when you mix warm air with cold air. Showerdome is the barrier between those two air masses, which means no steam in your shower or bathroom.

Concerns eased, confidence restored by Me2 Denture Studio Anyone who has had a bad experience with having dentures fitted would naturally be fearful about getting new ones fitted – even if their dentures needed replacing. However, a visit to the friendly team at Me2 Denture Studio in Riccarton will ease any concerns a person may have. “For anyone who would like to have their dentures replaced, we will first talk through the process with them to ensure we obtain the best possible results,” says manager Amy Jatoorapreuk. “People can choose how they want their new dentures to look and they can have the character of their original teeth so they look very natural. We are here to help people regain the look they had and regain their confidence,” Amy says. The dentures are made from top-of-the-line materials, with the teeth for the dentures all imported from Italy and the denture plates made up onsite at the Me2 Denture Studio by their highly experienced technician. They recommend that people with dentures have them replaced every five to 10 years and checked every three to five years, as they may need to be

relined. “We provide all services related to dentures,” says Amy. “That includes relining, repairs, and making and fitting partial plates.” The process of custom making and fitting dentures requires four to five appointments over a two to three-week period, and Me2 Denture Studio will work within the patient’s available timeframe. They can also carry out emergency denture work if necessary. People needing dentures can approach Me2 Denture Studio directly, or be referred through their dentist. “We also refer people to dentists. Unfortunately, there are people whose teeth are in poor condition and they have put up with discomfort and the inability to eat properly for a long time. Once they have their teeth removed by the dentist, we can provide them with a custom-made set of dentures, which will greatly improve their appearance, their quality of life and their overall health,” Amy says. Established in November 2014, Me2 Denture Studio is located at 3/233 Riccarton Road. To make an appointment, phone 341 5419

New qualifications for 2016

C

PIT will be offering students a number of new qualifications in 2016, in response to industry demand and the development of New Zealand certificates and diplomas. Science The New Zealand Certificate and Diplomas in Applied Science reflect a growing demand for science-based skills in New Zealand. The new programmes are designed to staircase people into a variety of careers that require graduates to think scientifically and analytically in example of a growing industry in Canterbury where science-based skills are in demand. For the New Zealand Animal Management and Veterinary Nursing qualifications (Levels 4, 5 and 6), industry demand has called for a new focus in training. At Level 4, the programme targets people who want a career working with animals in the welfare, boarding and pet shop areas. Students who intend to train to be a veterinary nurse assistant can enter the certificate at Level 5, and later choose to move onto Level 6 to gain their full New Zealand Diploma in Veterinary Nursing qualification. This may soon be required for national registration as a veterinary nurse. Languages Samoan is the third most commonly spoken

language in New Zealand after English and Maori. The Certificate in Samoan Language (Training Scheme) recognises this increasing community need for advanced proficiency in the language. Business In response to industry demand, the Bachelor of Applied Management programme has three new majors and associated graduate diplomas, which are pending in New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) approval. These include specialisations in personal financial planning, retail management and supply chain and logistics. Creative Arts The creative industries recognise that design skills are essential for New Zealand’s economic and cultural future, and this is reflected in the graduate profile of the Bachelor of Design’s new specialisations. Pending NZQA approval, the move from diploma to degree level study in photography and fashion technology will extend students’ practical skills while also exposing them to the academic aspect of creative practices. Employers will benefit from having graduates who have more depth in their portfolios. For more information regarding the new qualifications, check out the website www.cpit.ac.nz/new-qualifications.

Depending on the model of the vehicle, it reads and clears all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) to identify the faults. It also reads live vehicle data such as engine temperature, engine speed, vehicle speed and suspension height data. Plus, Roses Auto Electrical have the back-up of the worldwide Mercedes-Benz support base. The Autologic Mercedes-Benz Diagnostics machine covers vehicles from 1995 onwards,

Toyota Camry to bow out in style LIKE ALL automobile manufacturing facilities in Australia, Toyota will bow out in 2017. However, it will go out in style, a new Camry is rolling off the Altona production line and it is a lot more than just a facelift, the new model has a fresh body style, although it still sits on pretty much the same floorpan and mechanicals. According to Toyota, every panel on the Camry is new except for the roof, it is more rounded and less chunky than before, and is available here in New Zealand in seven variants, including the hybrid which is the subject of this evaluation. I’m due to test conventional models from the new Camry lineup later in the year, but I’ve often said that if I was a hybrid buyer I’d be looking at Camry as opposed to Prius, and nothing has changed my opinion of that. The Camry hybrid is the most conventional of all the hybrids I’ve driven. It looks just like its stablemates and drives little differently. Well, of course, the driver is always aware of the what is happening in terms of propulsion, there are a raft of gauges and displays to let him/her know about the hybrid operation, and if you are astute you can feel the engine cutting in and out, but if you don’t take any of that on board, you could be forgiven for thinking that

SPECIFICATIONS

you are driving a standard petrolengined 2.5-litre car. The latter is what makes the difference with Camry hybrid against Prius, although the hybrid operation is similar, the Prius with its 1.8-litre petrol engine doesn’t have the punch of Camry. Toyota rates the Camry with 118kW and 213Nm, and if you add in the power from the electric motor (33kW), the Camry feels quite lively and very torquey. As mentioned the Camry hybrid is very normal to drive, of course it wants to drive in electric mode all of the time, but such are the throttle demands that doesn’t happen constantly. During my time with the test car I selected electric vehicle mode often but seldom got further than 100m before the engine flicked on. I even tried to demonstrate electric mode to a young friend of my daughter, we were four-up in the Camry and I was trying to be gentle but only travelled a few metres before the engine cut in. That’s not a negative thing, I’m a great believer in hybrids, and there are many advantages, lower emissions

Price: Toyota Camry Atara S hybrid, $51,690. Dimensions: Length,4850mm; width, 1825mm; height, 1470mm. Configuration: Four-cylinder transverse, front-wheel-drive, 2494cc, 118kW, 213Nm, continuously variable automatic, 1575kg. Performance: 0-100km/h, 8.1sec.

TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID: Fresh body style. and respectable fuel usage figures, to name just a couple. Toyota rates the hybrid system with a 5.2-litre per 100km (54mpg) combined cycle average. At the end of four days with the test car I returned it to the dealership showing an average of 6.8l/100km (41mpg). These are good figures for a big car, and one that weighs in at 1575kg, and if you take into account I drove the Camry briskly during testing time, it feels strong beneath the accelerator and handles delightfully. A lot of the latter is due to the position of the batteries and the weight they generate. They sit low in the car and contribute to a low centre of gravity. In a corner the Camry hybrid stays flat without

much body movement. It can be pushed hard into a corner and the balance stays neutral. The tyres (215/55 x 17in Bridgestone Turanza), have high grip levels and provide solid information to the steering wheel. Turn-in is direct, while suspension movement easily arrests mid-corner bumps and deviations. All of the time the fully independent four-strut system is providing an absorbent ride, the occupants are treated to spring and damper rates well engineered for the rough nature of down under roads and the comfort levels we all expect from the large Australian car. The test car was badged Atara S and it sits midway in the specification level at $51,690, bearing

in mind that the hybrid model lands in only three spec levels as opposed to four in the non-hybrid line-up. Nevertheless, the Atara S is loaded with goodies. I’ve mentioned the comprehensive display graphics projected through a large central screen. There are also more graphics on the dash panel proper to encourage a gentle approach to throttle movement. The only notable exclusion with the Atara S would be satellite navigation, but I’m a firm believer in after-market GPS devices, so that needn’t be a consideration. It was good to be reacquainted with Camry, especially the ecofriendly version. I don’t think this is the last hurrah from Toyota with Camry, I’m sure as 2017 approaches there will be some last-gasp surprises within the line-up. But in the interim, the flash new body style and revisions have made it an even more desirable drive, the Camry is a smart piece of work.

S

et in a secluded rear site on Avonhead Road, this well-designed contemporary family home offers good living with space and comfort to spare. Built over two levels, this is a home that takes every advantage of the light and sun with its north-facing aspect. From the portico entrance through to the wellproportioned kitchen, the expansive living and dining spaces, this is a home that is designed to be easy to entertain, inside and out, with great access to the established grounds. Built on a large scale and featuring four large double bedrooms and an office, or additional single bedroom, three bathrooms, two living areas and a separate dining area, this well-specified and well-presented home does not stint on space. The TC1 land features private, walled grounds of 1355m2 that have been beautifully landscaped to include mature perimeter planting, a good-sized lawn and a hardwood deck with built-in seating where you can fire the barbecue up this summer. Located right in the zone for the popular schools of Westburn Primary, Merrin Primary, Cobham Intermediate, Burnside High School and just a short drive or cycle to the University of Canterbury, and the benefit of the airport within easy reach. Its proximity to retail, services, schools and recreational areas will make it a popular choice for many, while its lock and leave capability is certainly a bonus. Our owner

is motivated to sell so those serious about getting a head start will need to register their interest before a prior offer sees it miss the auction room altogether. Open Home dates: Sundays, October 11 and October 18, 1pm to 1.30pm. See you at the open home or before for a private viewing. Contact Cameron Bailey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 027 555 7079.
